Subsequent investigation revealed that Daniel D. Kahnell, 20, was south bound on Route 283, operating a 1993 Dodge pick-up truck. Kahnell, unable to take evasive action, struck pedestrian Ryan J. Converse, 21, of 26273 Route 283, Watertown who was standing in the center of the south bound lane of travel.

Troopers arrived and initiated life saving measures, which were subsequently turned over to EMS from the Black River Ambulance Service. Converse was transported to SMC hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the Calcium and North Pole fire departments, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

There are no apparent contributing factors on behalf of the motor vehicle operator.

The investigation is continuing.

(Watertown, NY – June 23, 2010) The New York State Police in Watertown are requesting assistance with identifying these two individuals. They are suspects in the theft of two payroll checks from the McDonald’s in Calcium, NY. The stolen checks were subsequently forged and cashed at the Community Bank on Arsenal and Washington streets in Watertown.

Two pieces of Jewelry were recovered from the Public Square Coin and Jewelry store in Watertown.

Martin was charged with 1 count of Grand Larceny 4th, arraigned in the Town of Pamelia Court and remanded to the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
