On January 14, 2010, approximately 9:00pm, State Police responded to a two car collision at the intersection of Route 11 and Route 26, in the town of Leray. The subsequent investigation revealed that Bobbie J. Monaghan, female, age 39, of Watertown, NY, was traveling west on ST-26, operating a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. Monaghan failed to stop at a red traffic light, and proceeded into the intersection striking a northbound 2000 Ford Taurus, being operated by Kelly A Peck, age 43, of Gouverneur, NY. Monaghan struck the passenger side of the northbound Peck vehichle, causing fatal injuries to font seat passenger Kathleen H Deyo, age 44, also of Gouverneur, NY. Also in the Peck vehicle were rear seat passengers James Kriegel and Dawna Kriegel, both of Gouverneur. Monaghan was charged with vehicular manslaughter 1st degree, and vehicular assault 1st degree, driving while intoxicated, and fail to stop-stop light. Monaghan was arraigned in the Town of Leray court, and committed to Jefferson County PSB in lieu of $50,000 bail, pending further court action.Kelly Peck and James Kriegel were treated and released from SMC Hospital, Watertown, NY. Dawna Kriegel was transported to University Hospital with non life threatening injuries. State Police were assisted by the Evans Mills Fire Department, Jefferson County District Attorney office, and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s office.
